1498 – The Portuguese settled in Bengal India after Vasco da Gama charted a sea route to India in 1498. Planned to send Indian needleworkers to Lisbon in 1511. The ship sank off Sumatra Indonesia. 1777-1808 – In 1777 old king Joseph died and Portugal was ruled by young Queen Maria. Her husband was King Pedro III. In 1786 Pedro died. Two years later a smallpox epidemic killed several people close to Queen Maria. In 1807 Queen Maria was smuggled into Brazil.
